Presidents Message – April 2025

Dear Aquarist,

April was a terrific meeting with the help of our long time friend and speaker for the night, Joe Yaiullo. Joe always gives a great presentation for us. He spoke on his 38 years of creating of the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead. We got to see his early drawings and watch the installation of the shark tank panels. It was sensational! We enjoyed his talk so much that we’ve setup a day to go visit the his aquarium. BAS is going to the L.I Aquarium on Saturday, August 16th, and everyone is invited. All members, family, and friends are welcome.

We will be collecting money at the next two meetings. The price is as follows: for the aquarium only is $22.00, the boat tour with the aquarium is $40.00 and the butterfly exhibit adds $2.00 to any package. All three total $42.00. Please pay by the June meeting. Please note that these are club discount prices. Anyone not paying before, will not get the discount the day of the trip. We will meet at the aquarium at noon on the 16th.

Our photo contest is still running — so enter your pictures. You can enter as often and as many as you like. As you know, taking good pictures of your fish is challenging, but showing off your tank can be very rewarding!

Next month will be the Giant Auction. There is no speaker, just an auction and sales table with plenty of great stuff. We will be auctioning off a brand new 55 gal fish tank as well!

The 50/50 will continue each month, as it has been really successful for both the club, and our members. Whatever livestock and plants members bring in, we split the proceeds 50/50 for their highest ten bags. This is for livestock only. We have had encouraging feedback from doing this, because it’s a great way to make some money and enjoy breeding your favorite species.

Let us know if you want speakers on a particular aquatic topic. We need our members to be involved in improving our club. So let us know your ideas! Also consider lending a hand at the meetings. It takes a lot of hard work from our board members to put on an organized, informative and entertaining show every month. Anyone wishing to help out, we will gladly give you something to do.

Remember to visit our Facebook page where we feature items for sale, manufacturers listing, and member’s feedback. We always have tanks and equipment. If you are looking for something aquatic, reach out to us. We probably have it in storage. We can’t bring everything to the meeting! Also if you have any aquatic related items you don’t need, we will always take them for our sales table.

After the auction ends, please exit the building promptly so clean up can occur. Only board members should be in the building after the auction ends. The aquarium security needs to leave at a reasonable time. We must stay on good terms with NY Aquarium, so we can continue to meet there.

Our sole publication, AquaticNews, is now published twice a year: Fall/Winter and

Spring/Summer. Any hobby or aquatic information you hear or read about, please share with our editor, Ginny Cahill. Please send all emails to Ginny at basny.editor@gmail.com. We are always looking for your input on our events and publications!
